Photographs documenting selected range studies conducted by the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, a division of the U. S. Forest Service in Portland, Or., 1927-1962. The photos depict studies in national forest plots in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho and various study topics, including livestock management, species studies, reseeding, and habitat measurement, among other topics. All photographs were taken by staff of the U. S. Forest Service.

The evolution of the USDA Forest Service is rooted in the General Provision Act of l89l in which Congress authorized the President to designate particular areas of the forested public domain to be set aside as "reserves" for future use.
